Big Boys’ Toys

By Ngee Khiong in Swinburne on May 26th, 2008

This is the 11th year of my interest in collecting and assembling Gunpla. Instead of giving up the hobby due to studies and work constraint, I must say that my addiction to it is now way too severe for any treatment.

Back in the old days, when I was still a secondary school student, I hesitated sharing my interest with my classmate. Most of them know nothing about the world of Gunpla, and even after much explanation, they would just shrug if off and say, “Still playing toys-eh?”

“They are not toys-lah. You need to assemble them yourself, and if you know how to paint them, they would look even better.”

“So they are toys that need to be painted then. Very troublesome-leh, and expensive too.”

OK. I gave up then. ^^;

Gradually, I started to realize that there’s no justification needed for one’s interest. My friend’s face went blank when I told him I spent RM1k on a single Gunpla a few years ago; and my face must be of the same expression when he told me he flew all the way to KL just to watch Manchester United played against our country around that same time.

PGGundamMK2&Zeta
Perfect Grade Zeta and Titans’ Gundam Mk. II, costed me Rm1.7k for the both of them.

And when we told our friends who aren’t into Gunpla and football, they must be wondering if there’s a logical explanation to our obsession too.

Good luck to them if they are still looking for it now ^^;

I’m relieved that when I came to Swinburne, I met a few friends who know about Gundam and Gunpla. While their addiction to it isn’t as strong as mine, it’s good to at least being able to share my interest with them. As the number of students increases rapidly in the university over these few years, the number of Gunpla fans gradually increases as well. Some I met through friends’ introduction; and sometime I get introduced to others as well. I even know one or two girls who assemble Gunpla.

When I started my own blog about Gundam and Gunpla in 2006, I have the pleasure of occasionally bumping into people who said to me, “Hey, your blog is Ngee Khiong right? I collect Gunpla too.” And we would chit-chat about the interest for as long as time permits.

With so many people around me getting into Gunpla-ing, and a Gundam related blog to run, how am I supposed to stop this interest anyway? ^^;

There are things we loved to do when we were still young, which would eventually be given up as we move to the next stage in our life, but it’s really up to our choice whether we want to give up our childhood interest. There’s no reason to give it up just because you want to “grow up”.

Toys? Well, just call them big boys’ toys then. ^^

The over-population issue of my display cabinet might s-l-o-w down my purchases ^^;

Rain falls from the sky

By rain in Swinburne on May 24th, 2008

So… the big question: why am I here?

I was MSN’ed by Woon Yien at about 1am in the morning… she approaching me about writing for SwinTalk – Cheers to Saad for giving up his time to set up a blog (though I think Wordpress needs a little update and some plugins ;) ) Thank you very much for the invitation, I feel honored that I can post here. I must warn you though, writing and photography, both a must in the world of blogging, aren’t exactly my forte.

For those who were with the forums last time, you guys should know me as teh SSSC Forum l33t poster with the most posts. For those who are new, I’m the current president of the Swinburne Anime and Manga Society. If you look around Swinburne, you’d probably spot a guy who has the longest hair you’d probably not notice me. (*psst* If Woon Yien is a 10/10 noticed person in Swinburne, I would be -55) I think that should be enough for my personal introduction.

Saad and Woon Yien didn’t explicitly tell me anything about rules and regulations for posting on this blog. Usually, what I post on my blog would be things like this:

That’s my 24″ Dell behind. XD

And this:

Let’s hope the management doesn’t see this…

And finally, this as well:

I’d give you a free waffle (flavour of your choice) if you can identify all those Swinburne Students in the above picture.

Many people often ask me, what the heck is the Anime and Manga Society about? The pictures above describe very visually some of the activities that we have organised and participated in. I thought it would be fitting to introduce you guys to some of the things that a Swinburne Sarawak student has the opportunity to do.

That should be enough for today… Welcome!, once again and do enjoy this blog! And I’m back to watching brain-damaging stuff like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1xAyN9kNas

Edit: I just realized that Saad’s not using utf8 in his database… so the Japanese words that I’ve typed are showing up as question marks ‘?’. And youtube doesn’t seem to want to embed itself here…

I lurves SwinTalk !!

Hello Guys! Surprised to see this new blog? Yup yup.. like what Saad have mentioned.. we finally have our own Swinburne Blog.. Hurray hurray!!!!!!!!!! haha.. I think i will be more casual on that, no particular subject, no specific topics.. just a casual talk and common stories of me in Swinburne.. yeaaaahh… This is a Swinburne Blog rite?? So everything about Swinburne can be discussed here.. muahaha!!

I still remember when i first enter my foundation in 2005… Swinburne only owns 4 levels of the building… and of coz, we shared with the cmm staff… Can you imagine??!!! You are going to Uni and there are still lotsa office staff walking here and there in the Campus.. Oh.. another very memorable changes of ours… our beloved hostel.. I still remember we only have 30 rooms in the hostels.. yess!!! it means that 60 students in hostel.. But now.. looked at our hostel.. its significant!!!! Sometimes when i have nothing to do.. i will just day dream at room 3.18 and think of how our Swinburne used to look like.. *grin* ( room 3.18 faced the hostel direction bah)

OMG.. why am i talking about this old stuff.. it makes me sounds so OLD… -shakes head- haha… Okok.. Switch topic.. Well.. i personally loves to blog.. Having this SwinTalk will definitely benefits the students in Swinburne.. we have our own channel of speaking.. we can blog and participate in our own Swinburne Community.. we can know what is happening in Swinburne.. and also.. we can know more of our beloved swinburners.. I remember we have a forum past 2 years and i actually know a lot of people through that forum… good people of coz!!! =) how good this thing is rite???? A New Journey Begins – SwinTalk.com

By Saad Kamal in Swinburne on May 12th, 2008

I have been trying to make some time to do the first post on this blog for the last couple of days (in fact almost a week) ….and finally today is the day – May 12th 2008, my computer tells me its 9:20 AM but I know my clock is actually 10 minutes fast, so that I’m not late for my classes…(But it doesn’t really work for me though…Sigh~)

Exam HallAnyway, I’m not sure what I’m gonna write today as its kind of early and I’m ‘very hungry’! But I guess I’ll be able to survive until the next few lines that I write.. Firstly exam is almost ‘knocking on the door’ which kind of reminds me of a song – ‘knock, knock knockin’ on Heaven’s door….’ for no apparent reason :S Well the exam is going to start from 9th of June (Just 2 days after my birthday Wow) and ‘our trial’ continues until 19th if I’m not mistaken. [Latest Info has been posted in BlackBoard]

Best of Luck to all!

Swin Talk Online CommunityOK, now what is this website all about? Well the main objective of coming up with a ‘blog’ for Swinburne students is pretty straight forward — “Enhance Communication + Broaden Your Network of Friends”. I am well aware that several ‘other’ online mediums has been tried in past – with or without success. I’m not in the liberty to discuss about their ’short life span’ & the reason of discontinuation… However what I can really say is, It is absolutely necessary for us (as students) to have some sort of communication channel, online. And I believe blog can be a part of that channel. When swinburne actually reaches their target of 5000 Students, the current university life is going to change even a lot more. You will be getting ‘less personal attention’ from people around you as everyone is just going to be ‘really busy’!

Swinburne Blog CartoonOur goal is to get bloggers within Swinburne (Students & Staffs) and give them access to this blog so that they can start contributing (in terms of writing, of course =) whenever they can. So this way we can get the latests news of Swinburne and the updates of our schoolmates & friends….all in one place. If you don’t wish to write you can always participate in discussion by leaving ‘comments’ on the posts. (To avoid Spammers, All comments will be moderated & you will need to register yourself first).

Now would you like to blog here? If you do, simply shoot a small email to – info[at]swintalk.com and we will get you set up for blogging.

Swintalk Gift TrollySo tell your friends about this blog and lets spread the news virally! You can also do a small blog ‘post’ on your own blog about this website and to show our appreciation we will feature your blog URL in our blogroll section which will be seen by hundreds of other Swinburners once they visit our site. We also plan to have lots of online contest & hopefully will be able to give away tons of prizes. So would you like to make any of the box yours? Then start writing comments or blog for Swintalk.com. You can blog about practically anything and it doesn’t really need to be anything to do with ’studies’ or ’swinburne’. There will be separate categories for each ‘type’ of posts so you will get the flexibility to write about almost everything. But we would encourage you to write more about your ’student life’ and also about things that you feel will interest other readers of SwinTalk.com.

OK! This post is becoming way to long, so I’ll just end this post with a short video clip that I made with some of old photos that I found in my laptop. Well technically all the photos are from SSSC Term 2006…. I really miss all the activities that we used to have in swinburne…I am hoping we will see more of these in future.

Have a nice day and thanks for supporting SwinTalk.com! Hope to see you here again..
