Garbage Enzyme

By ericsoon in Random Ramblings on September 29th, 2008

I always thought that garbage is just one of the pollution factors. Environment maintenance isn’t really my field of interest. However, I am pretty awed to know that garbage isn’t entirely useless.

Some of the garbage can be recycled, some cannot. Recycling materials only enables us to reuse. On the biological part, garbage enzyme is more “multi-purpose-ful”. Refer to here.

It can be used as cleaning fluid, soil fertilizer, natural pesticide and herbicide, anti-bacteria agent, as well as foul odor remover.

Somehow, garbage just do not seem to be in a positive relationship with all the four uses above. But hey, it’s true.

It’s easy to make garbage enzyme. All you need is water, organic kitchen waste, the black sugar found in 3-layer teh c peng, and an air-tight container of any preferred size.

The ingredients ratio as follows:

Sugar : Organic Waste : Water

1 : 3 : 10

By the way, you do not have to be so precise and calculative.

Leave the solution sealed tight for 3 months, and the solution is ready for usage. It might be a little disgusting to make use of decomposed organic waste, but the results are good. Start making a bottle at the beginning of a semester and you can spare some money on mosquito repellent during midnight study before final exam.

On a side note, organic waste does not include humans and animals’ biological waste.

So, who wants to start using the liquid as repellent? It’s a odor remover, so it shouldn’t be that smelly.

Swintalk Video Friday Ep 1

If you have a wireless router in your house that is out of the range of your wireless device (e.g. your laptop), you can easily extend your wireless antenna transmission power of your router with this easy hack.

If you are experiencing a very slow wireless connection speed but you have no control over the router (such as in Swinburne Hostel), you can use the hack below to make a Wireless Range Extendeder for your laptop. So just plug it in with your laptop when you want the wireless range to be extended, position it properly and Rock the net!!

Using MPH (as in Multi Purpose Hall)

By satriakid in News, SwinTalk, Swinburne on September 26th, 2008

I reckon a few students of Swinburne knew the MPH in our campus has been opened for usage by the students. It was said that it will be opened on the 22nd September for usage and with a few friends, we headed over for a game of badminton which I ended up with a sore thigh from a workout in the gym, as someone asked me to lift the weight of my own body. :\

Anyway, the place is fully ventilated by the centralized air-con, so its cool inside there, except certain time where its cold.

The MPH has allocated time and session for which sports would be allowed, which one can find it on the left of the wall when you enter the hall from the main front entrance. Its a piece of paper pratically stuck to the wall.

Overall, the place is great, with rubberized floor like Sports Arena.

And like Johnson Woon would say, “Hey, how come got wind one in the hall ar?”. That was when he missed the shuttlecock. Hope to see you all there using it.

PS: They gym is kinda cool too. Bigger. And we now have LCD TVs. 32″ of pure widescreen.

Join the Swinburne Sarawak network on Facebook!

By ember in Swinburne, Tech on September 25th, 2008

When Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, three Harvard students started Facebook in 2004, it was originally meant to network Harvard students to keep in touch with each other. By 2005, Facebook grew to include an amazing 800 college networks across the US of A.

Fast forward 2008. Facebook is now home to more than a 100 million active users worldwide.

All this left me wondering why isn’t there a Swinburne Sarawak network Swinburnites can join. There is a network created for our parent campus in Melbourne, but it doesn’t seem to accept our emails.

So yours truly decided to take this matter into his own hands and attempted to create a Facebook network for Swinburne Sarawak. After about a month of email correspondence with the slow-replying Facebook team using my Swinburne webmail, they finally agreed to create a network just for us!

Great! Now how can I be part of it?

Easy.

If you have a Facebook account. Just head to the Settings dropdown and choose ‘Account Settings’. At your ‘My Account’ page, click on the Network tab. If you’re having trouble reaching your Network settings just follow this link: facebook.com/editaccount.php?networks.

At your Network tab, you should have a section on the right that says ‘Join a Network’, looking like this:

Enter ‘Swinburne’ as the Network name and voila! =D

The next steps you’ll have to fill in are pretty much self-explanatory. Even Swinburne Staff and those of you who’ve graduated can join this network!

For the School Email field, you’ll have to enter your email address provided by Swinburne which looks something like ‘<insert your own student id here>@students.swinburne.edu.my’. Facebook would then shoot you a verification email. You’d have to login your Swinburne webmail via this link: studentmail.swinburne.edu.my to verify your address.

Click on the link included in the email and you’re done!

Now spread the news!

P.S: I’m undecided on what should be the name of the network. It’s currently pretty long, ie. ‘Swinburne University of Techonlogy Sarawak’ Our parent campus’s network is just ‘Swinburne’.

What do you guys think? Should it be just ‘Swinburne Sarawak’ or ‘Swinburne (Sarawak Campus)’?
