A few words for Laughs!

By Da-Mass in Swinburne on March 1st, 2009

1. A  FOOLish man tells a woman to STOP talking, but a WISE man  tells her that she looks extremely BEAUTIFUL when her LIPS are  CLOSED.

2.  One GOOD way to REDUCE Alcohol consumption :
Before  Marriage – Drink whenever you are SAD,
After Marriage – Drink whenever you  are HAPPY

3.  Three FASTEST means of Communication :
1.  Tele-Phone
2.  Tele-Vision
3.  Tell to Woman
Need  still FASTER – Tell her NOT to tell ANY ONE.

4.  Love your friends not their sisters. Love your sisters not their friends.

5. A  man got 2 wishes from GOD. He asked for the Best wine and  Best Woman.
Next  moment, he had the Best Wine and Mother Teresa next to him.
Moral  : BE SPECIFIC

6.  What is a BEST and WORST news you can hear at the SAME time ?
It  is when your Girl Friend says YOU are the BEST KISSER among all your Friends.

7.  Let us be generous like this : Four Ants are moving through a forest.
They  see an ELEPHANT coming towards them. Ant 1 says : we should  KILL him.
Ant  2 says : No, Let us break his Leg alone. Ant 3 says : No, we  will just  throw him away from our path.
Ant 4 says : No, we will LEAVE  him because  he is ALONE and we are FOUR.

8.  If you do NOT have a Girl Friend – You are missing SOME thing in your life.
If you HAVE a Girl Friend – You are missing EVERY thing in your  life.

9.  Question : When do you CONGRATULATE someone for their  MISTAKE.
Answer  : On their MARRIAGE.

10.  When your LIFE is in DARKNESS, PRAY GOD and ask him to free you from  Darkness.
Even after you pray, if U R still in Darkness -  Please PAY  the  ELECTRICITY BILL.

11.  Why Government do NOT allow a Man to MARRY 2 Women.
Because per Constitution,  you can NOT PUNISH TWICE for the same Mistake.

Noruz, beauty of the Iranian culture

By Amir in Swinburne on February 28th, 2009

Noruz in Persian language means “New Day”. It’s more than thousands of years that people of the Greater Iran have been celebrating the commencement of spring, the season of beauty and life as the beginning of their new year. Spring brings beauty, peace and defeats the coldness and darkness. Spring is when everyone would love to go out and see the earth, flowers and trees flourishing to start a new life for another year. Spring brings the message of hope and getting reborn, eliminating the coldness and darkness from inside our hearts and joining the nature in starting a new year of life, to enjoy all the beauties our Lord has offered us with his infinitive generousness.

Noruz marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the Iranian year. It is celebrated on the day of the astronomical vernal equinox (the start of spring in the northern hemisphere), which occurs on March 20. At the time of the equinox, the sun is observed to be directly over the equator and the north and south poles of the Earth lie along the solar terminator; sunlight is evenly divided between the north and south hemispheres.

During Noruz, Iranians set up a table, called “Haft Sin” meaning “Seven S”. Haft S?n (??? ???) or the seven ‘S’s is a major tradition of Noruz. The haft sin table includes seven specific items starting with the letter ‘S’ or S?n (?) in Persian alphabet. The items symbolically correspond to seven creations and holy immortals protecting them. Traditionally, families attempt to set as beautiful a Haft S?n table as they can, as it is not only of traditional and spiritual value, but also noticed by visitors during Noruzi visitations and is a reflection of their good taste.

  • sabzehwheat, barley or lentil sprouts growing in a dish – symbolizing rebirth
  • samanu – a sweet pudding made from wheat germ – symbolizing affluence
  • senjed – the dried fruit of the oleaster tree – symbolizing love
  • s?rgarlic – symbolizing medicine
  • s?bapples – symbolizing beauty and health
  • somaqsumac berries – symbolizing (the color of) sunrise
  • serkehvinegar – symbolizing age and patience

As I mentioned above Noruz is celebrated in Greater Iran, Caucasus, Central Asia and by Iranians worldwide. It is a public holiday in: Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kashmir, and Kyrgyzstan. Noruz is also celebrated by Kurds in Iraq and Turkey as well as by Parsis in India and Pakistan.

Iranian New Year, Noruz starts accurately on 20th of March 2009 at 19:58′:58″ Kuala Lumpur time which is exactly when our Earth changes its position against Sun and the season of Spring starts in the northern hemisphere and that is why Iranian calendar is known as the world’s most accurate calendar.

This year, unlike the previous years, we will have Haft-Seen table in our school. We will set it up in the Lobby of block G and will be there from 16th of March till 23rd to distribute sweets among the students of this truly international university and also answer any of your questions.

See you there and happy New Year

By @lex in Swinburne on November 13th, 2008

Hello, fellow Swinburne students.

Thank you for voting me and my team as your new Swinburne Student Council members for year 2009. It was great and challenging to be competitors of Edina’s team. Perhaps, we can look forward to work together in the near future.I would also like thank all those who have supported me during this election period.

This victory alone is not the change everyone is seeking for; it is only the chance for us to make that change. The road ahead will be long but I have never been more hopeful than I am that evening that we will try our best to get there and you have my word.

There will be setbacks. There will be many who won’t agree with every decision we make. But we will always be honest with you about the challenges we face and we shall listen to you.

This is our chance to answer it all. This shall be our moment of time to put our manpower to work and open doors of opportunity;we are one;that while we’re still here, we hope; and where we are met with cynicism and doubt of those who tell us that we can’t, we will prove them wrong and say : Yes, we can.

But, above all,we will never forget who this victory belongs to. It belongs to all of you who believed and voted for us.

Thank you and good luck to all of Swinburne students in your final exams. God bless you!

A message to election campaigns

By Amir in Celebration & Events, Random Ramblings, Swinburne on November 11th, 2008

Now that two campaigns have already posted their intros and slogans, I found it note worthy to remind them a few things:

Guys! We, as Swinburne Students, are tired of just listening to aimless slogans, which would be definitely forgotten or could not be fulfilled after you got elected! They are very very general and do not point to a certain problem!  Let me justify my thought:

Let’s start with Alex’s:
They have come up with the following general slogans:

1. To be proactive, responsive, communicative, more transparent, and an effective advocate for the students.
(What do you mean by proactive, communicative, transparent and effective? How do you want to be like that? Describe your programs)
2. Encourage a co-operative approach to learning, living, and working together in the school community.
(Again  how? Let’s say today is your first day in office! How would you start your program?)
3. Be student medium in which they can channel their views and voice their opinions.
(It is exactly the same slogan for almost every campaign, currently and in the past! Highlight your different method of bringing it to reality, if you have any!?)
4. Solve issues/problems that students have by encouraging students to participate in open meetings & discussion.
(Sounds like a good idea. Describe it in detail! I’m sure you are not gonna have a meeting with 2000 students!)

5. Organize more exciting and meaningful events for students. (Like? How?)

6. Forge a closer tie among local and international students.(Hey! you do not have even one international student in your  campaign! How can you claim this?)

I can see the same problems in the girls campaign’s slogans.
We do not really want to see another boring (Sorry current SSSC!) club, which is just carrying the name of  Swinburne Sarawak Students Council, but is actually Swinburne Sarawak Few Students Council! I do appreciate former clubs’ hard efforts, but there are still lots of problems you guys are expected to address! The long procedure of establishing a club and getting SSSC’s financial help is one of our main issues. As a committee member of International Students club, I have personally witnessed this hectic thing when we were arranging International Students Cultural Night.

Once more, avoid historic slogans and come up with something new! Not general, but specific.

Speaking on my own behalf, I would not vote for a group which does not describe its program specifically .

Thank you
